Helping Shelters Affected by Hurricane Sandy
If you are a shelter or rescue affected by the storm and need help, please email jennifer@adoptapet.com and let us know what information we can post for you! We’ve created a special page http://adoptapet.com/Sandywhich we are updating constantly as we get information, organized by state. We are promoting that page on our own Facebook page, blog, and newsletter to encourage people to donate, volunteer, adopt, and spread the word about how to help pets and their humans affected by Hurricane Sandy. Our hats are off to the many national and local organizations who are responding to help animal shelters, rescues, and pet owners care for their pets in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy. We salute organizations like PetSmart Charities, and our sponsor Purina, who sent sent truckloads of pet food, litter, crates, blankets, and other supplies to local organizations to help displaced families care for their pets.

Let Search Saver be your Pets’ Matchmaker

Our Search Saver emails are incredibly popular – we send out over 3 million Search Saver emails every month! So how can you use this popular and powerful free tool to increase your adoptions? Here’s two great ways we’ve heard many staff and volunteers tell us are not only a pet life-saver, but a people time-saver!

Do you have potential adopters that are interested in adopting a specific type of pet, but you don’t have that type of pet currently available? Maybe you have index cards or a spreadsheet to try to keep track and match those applicants with pets that might come in days or weeks later. If you do, why not turn over that task to Adopt-a-Pet.com’s Search Saver tool and let us do all that work for you? All you have to do is tell prospective homes: “Go to Adopt-a-Pet.com, run a search for the type of pet you want to adopt, and enter your email address. For the next 30 days (or until you cancel), Adopt-a-Pet.com will automatically email you photos of any new pets for adoption that match your search!”

Breed Rescues Using Search Saver Alerts

Another way we’ve heard this powerful tool used is by rescue organizations, especially those that specialize in particular breeds. Your rescue can run a search, put in your email address in the Search Saver box, and get an email notification when the type of pet you might rescue comes in to your local shelter that uses Adopt-a-Pet.com.

Do you use one of Adopt-a-Pet.com’s tools in a unique way? We’d love to hear about it, and share your innovative idea with other shelters so they can benefit too!

Need Food Donations? Purina Pets For People May Be Able To Help!

Purina’s support of animal welfare takes the form of Animal Welfare Support programs for non-profit organizations, described in detail on www.PetsforPeople.com. Their programs such as Pets for Seniors, Pro Plan® Rally to Rescue® and the Purina ONE® PetWelfare Program are dedicated to providing support for local animal welfare organizations in their efforts to find homes for adoptable animals.

Occasionally the Nestlé Purina PetCare Company may have food donations available in your area. When you register your organization on www.PetsforPeople.com you will be automatically considered for any food donations that become available near you. During 2011, Purina donated more than $13 million in pet food and litter. In addition, should your organization be affected by a natural disaster, Purina may be able to provide food to help feed your organization’s animals during your time of need.

And, of course…
As always, we thank the wonderful, pet-loving people at Purina and Bayer Animal Health for supporting all of us in our mission and making Adopt-a-Pet.com a free service!

That’s all our news for this month. We’d love to hear what’s going on with you too, so please stop by our pages on Facebook and Twitter to say a virtual hello!
