Grant Submission: Camp Merry Sunshine

Posted by Jennifer on August 8th, 2011

We’ve received so many wonderful submissions for the Purina Veterinary Diets® $50,000 Veterinary Care Fund! We are so moved by the amazing lengths rescues and shelters go to give homeless pets a chance at getting healthy so they can be adopted – and think you will be too! So we’re sharing some of the submissions, and all of the recipients’ stories here on our Shelter Blog. Here’s how a $2,000 grant would (or, in the case of our recipients, WILL) change the life of a pet or pets in their care:

Camp Merry Sunshine
Lockwood, MO

We get many of our dogs from dog auctions. Most have never had the chance for a real home. They live in small wire cages. They are rarely, if ever groomed. Most have not been handled except to be bred, have shots or medical treatment and then when their pups are weaned. They need lots of gentle handling to transform them into a well loved and spoiled pet.

Here are some pictures of a schnauzer we got this year. Sadly this is what most look like. This dog is just 1 year old. She could not even go potty without soiling herself. She had a huge ball of feces under her tail and urine burns down both back legs. her ears were so infected they had to be flushed professionally. She is a very happy and loving dog now. All she needs is a home.

The grant would go to spay/neuter our dogs. Currently, when a dog is adopted the new pet parents must wait for them to be done. Sometimes it takes a week or more before my vet has an opening. It would be much easier and faster if they were done prior to being put up for adoption.

We also get some dogs with horrendous dental issues. The dog in the pictures of chihuahuas are only 5 and 9 years old, yet, after their dental cleaning, they had over 20 teeth extracted as being rotted. The brown dog has 3 teeth left. She is a very sweet little dog but oh how much pain must she have been in! The grant would also go to health issues like teeth.

If we were awarded the grant, we could place more dogs in a shorter time as well as get extra help to do the serious items like teeth we currently do as much as possible. We are blessed with a vet who works with us on expenses and lets us run a tab if necessary but We don’t like to let it get too big. Thanks for considering CAMP MERRY SUNSHINE.
